Optimise your website for AI: redesign or improve what you have?
You want ChatGPT, search engines and AI agents to understand your business better. Does that mean rebuilding your website? Targeted improvements are often enough. A redesign becomes relevant when the limitations affect the whole site.

What does optimising a website for AI mean?
It means making your information accessible, understandable and useful: what you offer, who it serves, the evidence behind your claims and how to contact you. AI Visibility concerns your presence in generated answers. Agent Readiness concerns whether AI systems and agents can access your site, understand its data and use its interfaces.
These goals complement SEO. For Google's AI search features, SEO fundamentals still apply: no special “AI” markup is required. Optimisation does not guarantee a citation or recommendation.
When are improvements to your existing website enough?
If your site works well, is easy to update and generates enquiries, start with its most important pages. You can:
- Clarify service and product pages: audience, benefits, deliverables, conditions and verifiable evidence.
- Answer prospective customers' questions: pricing or cost factors, timelines, steps, limitations and differences between offers.
- Fix technical barriers: unintentionally blocked crawlers, important content that is difficult to extract, broken links or poorly connected pages.
- Structure your information: descriptive headings, relevant internal links and structured data that matches visible content.
An audit helps distinguish access, content and visibility issues before you invest in a redesign.
When should you consider a website redesign?
A redesign may make sense if your platform prevents essential fixes, your navigation no longer reflects your services, or visitors struggle to find information and contact you. It can also be worthwhile when every update requires costly workarounds.
Your brief should cover user experience, performance, SEO, AI understanding and conversion journeys. If agents need to perform actions, also define available interfaces, permissions and approval steps. Changing the design alone does not address these issues.
Where should you start to improve AI search visibility?
Prioritise pages that help customers decide: services, products, pricing, case studies and contact. Fix access barriers first, then missing or ambiguous information. Expand to useful content that answers questions your prospects actually ask.
Track practical outcomes: indexed pages, qualified enquiries, conversions and your presence across a relevant set of questions in AI systems. A single ChatGPT answer is not enough to measure progress.
A checklist to choose between improvements and a redesign
- Is your offer clear to someone who has never heard of your business?
- Is essential information accessible as text?
- Do your pages answer the questions people ask before contacting you?
- Can you improve their structure and content with your current platform?
- Can visitors move easily from finding information to taking action?
If the gaps are limited and straightforward to fix, prioritise optimisation. If your platform or site architecture prevents those improvements, consider a redesign.
Acadamio helps you identify priorities through Agent Readiness and AI Visibility audits, then implement them through website and content creation and optimisation for AI and agents.
